How to Unlock a PDF and Remove Password Protection

The Two Kinds of PDF Password, Explained
User password (open password)
This is the one most people mean by "PDF password". The file is locked shut — your viewer prompts you before you can see any content. Typical sources: banks encrypting statements, employers sending salary slips, attorneys exchanging case files. To unlock one of these here, you need to know the password. Once you type it in, we decrypt the content streams locally, strip the /Encrypt dictionary, and output a plain PDF.
Owner password (permission password)
This one is subtler. The file opens normally — no password prompt — but certain operations are blocked: printing, text copy, editing, annotation, page extraction. Many corporate systems produce owner-locked PDFs by default (think "do not print without authorization" warnings). You can unlock these here with ZERO input: drop the file and we detect that the user password is empty, strip the restrictions, done. Most competitors still ask you to type something, even though nothing is required.
Files with both locks
A PDF can have both an open password AND a separate owner password for permissions. The PDF spec says EITHER one can fully unlock the file. We let you enter whichever you know — our decryptor tries the user-password path first, then falls back to the owner-password path. One field, both cases handled.
Files where the password is truly unknown
If a PDF is user-locked and you don't know the password, no legitimate tool can unlock it. The encryption is mathematically strong (AES-256, or RC4 which is weaker but still requires a key). Tools that claim to "recover" an unknown password are either (a) brute-forcing common passwords, which takes days and only works for weak passwords, or (b) scams. If you've lost your own password, the realistic answer is to request a fresh copy from whoever sent it — or run a dictionary attack with a dedicated tool on your own machine.

Who Unlocks PDFs?
Removing print and copy restrictions
Corporate templates, government forms, and educational material are often distributed with print/copy blocked "for security" — even when the content itself isn't sensitive. How Does Browser-Based PDF Unlocking Actually Work?
Your PDF is read into your browser's memory. If it has an /Encrypt dictionary, we parse the encryption parameters (algorithm version, revision, user/owner hash data). For AES-256 R6 V5, we run the PDF 2.0 password-validation routine using SHA-256/384/512 and AES-128-CBC mixing to derive the file key from your password, then use that key to AES-256-CBC decrypt every encrypted object stream. For RC4 R3 V2, we run the legacy MD5 key-derivation and RC4 stream-decrypt on each object. Once all streams are plaintext, we rebuild the PDF without the /Encrypt dictionary. The output is a standard PDF 1.7 that opens in every modern viewer. All crypto runs in your browser via the Web Crypto API — no server involved at any step, and your password is never transmitted.
