PDF to EPUB — Free, Private, E-Reader Ready
Turn a PDF into a reflowable EPUB — for Kindle, Kobo, Apple Books, and every other e-reader
Drop a PDF and we extract the text, group it into paragraphs, and wrap it as a standards-compliant EPUB 3 e-book. Unlike PDF, EPUB reflows to your screen — tiny phone, 13" iPad, 6" Kindle, all look right. We're honest about the tradeoff: layout doesn't transfer (that's how EPUB works by design), but the text does, and that's what matters for reading. 100% in-browser — your PDF never leaves your device. No upload, no signup, no watermark, no file limit.

How to Convert PDF to EPUB for Kindle, Kobo & Apple Books
1. Drop your PDF
Drag the PDF onto the drop zone above, or click to browse. The file loads into your browser — nothing is uploaded to a server.
2. Convert locally
Click Convert to EPUB. We run the text extraction in your browser, cluster runs into paragraphs using Y-coordinate spacing, and wrap the result as an EPUB 3 ZIP archive. Typical conversion: a 100-page PDF finishes in 2–5 seconds on a modern laptop.
3. Download the EPUB
You get a single .epub file, standards-compliant EPUB 3 with legacy NCX fallback for older readers. Opens in every mainstream e-reader app.
4. Send to your device
Kindle: email the file to your send-to-kindle address (Amazon accepts EPUB since 2022). Kobo: drag the EPUB to the Kobo when connected via USB. Apple Books: tap Open in Books from Files. Google Play Books: upload at play.google.com/books. Moon+ Reader / Librera / KyBook: open via the app's file picker.
Why This is the Best Free PDF to EPUB Converter
100% local processing
Your PDF doesn't touch our servers because we don't have any for your files. Compare: CloudConvert, FreeConvert, Convertio, PDF24 all upload everything. If you're converting a purchased book, research paper, or medical record, that matters.
Honest about what transfers
Most SERP competitors promise "EPUB with full layout preservation" — an impossibility given how EPUB works. We tell the truth upfront: text carries over, layout is reader-decided. Readers prefer tools that don't lie to them.
Standards-compliant EPUB 3
Spec-required stored mimetype as first ZIP entry, META-INF/container.xml, EPUB 3 navigation document, legacy NCX fallback for older readers, UUID identifier, dcterms:modified stamp. Output passes epubcheck structural validation — unlike a few popular converters that produce malformed archives.
Paragraph-aware clustering
PDFs store text as coordinate-anchored runs with no built-in paragraph concept. We cluster by Y-gap: same-line items merge, large gaps become new paragraphs. You get readable prose in your e-reader, not an unbroken wall of text.
One tool, many e-readers
The output works on Kindle (via Send-to-Kindle), Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook, Moon+ Reader, Librera, KyBook, and any other EPUB-capable reader. Convert once, read anywhere.
No file-size or page-count limit
Drop a 10-page article, a 500-page book, or a multi-hundred-MB textbook. Only bound by device memory. CloudConvert's free tier caps at 25 MB; FreeConvert at 1 GB (paid: unlimited). We have no cap because there's no server to bill for storage.
Truly Free, Forever
No trial, no premium tier, no per-file charge. Ad-supported so it stays free for everyone.
No account, no email
Start converting immediately. No signup, no email capture, no credit card.
Same text engine as the editor
The text-extraction path is the same code our main editor uses for /pdf-to-text — one implementation, battle-tested. We reuse it here rather than shipping a second, less-tested copy.
Which E-Reader Do You Use?
Kindle (Amazon)
Amazon's Send-to-Kindle service accepts EPUB since late 2022. Email the .epub to your personal send-to-kindle address (format: youraccount@kindle.com, visible on Amazon's Manage Your Content page). The book lands in your library and syncs to every Kindle device and Kindle app. Older workaround for pre-2022 devices: run the EPUB through Calibre to convert to AZW3, then sideload via USB.
Kobo
Three paths. USB: connect the Kobo, drag the .epub onto the device, disconnect. Kobo Cloud: if you have Dropbox or Google Drive sync set up in Kobo settings, drop the file into the synced folder. Calibre: if you use Calibre as your library, drag the file into Calibre and use Send to Device.
Apple Books (iOS, iPadOS, macOS)
iOS/iPadOS: download the .epub from Safari, tap Open in Books (or go to Files and long-press the file). macOS: double-click the file, or drag it onto the Books app icon. The book appears in your Books library and syncs across all your Apple devices via iCloud.
Google Play Books
Visit play.google.com/books/uploads and upload the .epub. The book syncs to your Play Books library on Android, iOS, and the web reader. Note that Play Books has a 100 MB per-file cap that matches most converted EPUBs comfortably.
Nook
Barnes & Noble Nook accepts EPUB natively — drag via USB, or upload through the Nook mobile app's import flow on newer models.
Moon+ Reader / Librera / KyBook (Android / iOS)
Any third-party EPUB reader app accepts the file via "Open With" from the browser's download manager or the Files app. These apps often have more customisation than the built-in e-reader experience.

The point isn't that CloudConvert or FreeConvert are bad tools — they're solid for many formats we don't yet support. The point is that for PDF → EPUB specifically, local + honest-positioning + no-upload is a better fit for reading-focused users who are already privacy-sensitive. Converting a purchased book shouldn't involve sending the file to a third party.
Who Converts PDF to EPUB?
Readers who bought a PDF book
You bought a PDF on Gumroad, itch.io, or a small-press publisher site and want to read it on your Kindle instead of squinting at fixed-size pages. Convert once, read reflowably.
Researchers and students
Academic papers in PDF are readable on desktop but fight back on small screens. EPUB adapts to your phone or tablet, with adjustable font size for long reading sessions on the train.
Public-domain archives
Project Gutenberg, Internet Archive, and national library scans are often PDF. Convert to EPUB for a better reading experience — especially on e-ink devices where reflowing saves battery and eye strain.
Long technical manuals
Software documentation, API references, and engineering manuals often ship as PDF for print fidelity. EPUB lets you read them on a phone or tablet while working, with text that actually wraps.
Personal archive consolidation
If you maintain a personal reading library, EPUB is better for long-term archival than PDF — smaller, searchable across devices, and reader-agnostic. Convert your PDF collection to EPUB once, store the .epub alongside the original .pdf.
Accessibility and screen readers
EPUBs are significantly more accessible to screen readers than PDFs. Text reflow means large-font users don't lose context; heading structure means JAWS / NVDA / VoiceOver can navigate. Converting a PDF to EPUB is often the single biggest accessibility improvement for a document.
Translators and proofreaders
Working on a translation or proofread? Having the source as EPUB means your CAT tool or editor can import and segment the text properly — PDFs require pre-processing that EPUB skips.
Onboarding packets
Company welcome docs, employee handbooks, and training material distributed as PDF become genuinely readable on mobile once converted to EPUB — which matters when new hires read them on phones before their first day.
Travel reading
Airplane mode plus a Kindle plus an EPUB library is a better reading experience than fighting a PDF on a small screen. Convert before you fly; read anywhere.
Convert PDF to EPUB on iPhone, Android, Mac, Windows, and Chromebook
Our PDF to EPUB converter works on every device with a modern browser — Windows, Mac, Linux, Chromebook, iPad, iPhone, and Android. No app install, no plugins, no admin rights. Once the page has loaded you can disconnect from the internet and continue converting. The output .epub file downloads directly to your device's download folder where your e-reader app can pick it up.
How Does Browser-Based PDF to EPUB Actually Work?
We use PDF.js to extract the text stream from each page — the same library every browser uses to render PDFs. That stream is a list of text runs with (x, y) coordinates but no paragraph structure. We cluster the runs: items with similar Y-values merge into a line; Y-gaps larger than ~1.4× the median line height start a new paragraph. Each PDF page becomes one chapter in the output EPUB, wrapped as XHTML with <p> elements for paragraphs. The XHTML chapters plus a manifest (content.opf), navigation docs (nav.xhtml + toc.ncx), and a minimal style.css are packaged as a ZIP archive with fflate — the mimetype file stored first as the EPUB spec requires. The result is a valid EPUB 3 that passes epubcheck validation and opens cleanly in every mainstream reader. All processing happens in your browser — no server involved at any step.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I convert a PDF to EPUB for free?
Drop your PDF on the page above and click Convert to EPUB. The file is built locally and downloaded. Free, no signup, no watermark.
What is EPUB?
Open standard for e-books. Reflowable text, adjustable font, used by Kindle (since 2022), Kobo, Apple Books, Google Play Books, Nook, and every other mainstream e-reader.
Is my PDF uploaded?
No. Conversion is entirely in your browser. Nothing leaves your device.
Will layout transfer?
No. EPUB is reflowable by design — the reader decides the layout. Text and paragraph structure transfer; tables, images, and multi-column layouts do not. This is a tradeoff that applies to every PDF-to-EPUB tool, not just ours.
Can I send the output to my Kindle?
Yes. Email the .epub to your send-to-kindle address (you@kindle.com). Amazon has accepted EPUB directly since late 2022.
Does it work with scanned PDFs?
Only if the PDF has an OCR text layer. Pure-image scans need to be OCR'd first — Adobe Acrobat or macOS Preview both ship with built-in OCR.
What EPUB version?
EPUB 3.0 with an EPUB 2 NCX fallback for older readers. Passes epubcheck structural validation.
Does it work with password-protected PDFs?
If the PDF is owner-locked (opens without a password), yes. If it needs a password, unlock it first with /unlock-pdf, then convert.
Does the output have a watermark?
No. Your EPUB contains exactly the text content of the source PDF — no added content.
Is there a file-size limit?
No artificial limit. Your device's memory is the only ceiling.
Can I convert PDF to EPUB on my phone?
Yes. Works on iPhone Safari, iPad, Android Chrome, and every other modern mobile browser.
Does it work offline?
Yes, once the page has loaded.
Is there a difference between PDF to EPUB and PDF to Kindle?
Not since late 2022. Kindle now accepts EPUB directly via Send-to-Kindle. The older MOBI and AZW3 formats are legacy — if you're on a current Kindle or any Kindle app from 2023 onward, EPUB is the right format.
Can I convert EPUB back to PDF?
Not directly on our site yet — EPUB → PDF is on the roadmap. For now, opening the EPUB in any reader and using the Print function with "Save as PDF" produces a clean PDF copy.
How does this compare to Calibre?
Calibre is a fantastic desktop app with deeper conversion controls (custom rules, heuristics, cover extraction). Our tool is for the fast-web case: you don't want to install anything, you don't need advanced rules, and you don't want to upload your PDF to a stranger's server. For library management and edge-case conversions, Calibre is still the gold standard.
Is this the best PDF to EPUB converter?
For privacy-first readers who want fast e-reader-ready output with honest positioning, we think so. For library management, try Calibre. For promised-but-unachievable layout fidelity, try any competitor — you'll find they all ship similarly text-only results regardless of what they claim.
