Currently the converter focuses on the text layer — images embedded in the PDF are not extracted into the HTML output. Will fonts look identical?

Preserved mode uses font-size and a fallback font stack guessed from the PDF's font name (serif, monospace, or sans-serif). The exact glyph rendering will use whatever font the reader's browser substitutes, since we don't bundle the source PDF's fonts in the output. For pixel-faithful font rendering, use Preserved mode plus a CSS @font-face declaration loading the original fonts. For most use cases the substituted stack looks very close to the source.

Is the output PDF/A or HTML5 compliant?

The output is valid HTML5 with embedded CSS. It opens in every modern browser including IE11+. Reflowable mode produces semantic markup (h1, h2, h3, p, section) that screen readers and search engines parse correctly. Preserved mode is also valid HTML5 but uses absolute positioning, which is visually faithful but less semantic.

Is there a file-size limit?

No artificial limit. Your device's memory is the only ceiling. A typical 50-page PDF converts to ~500 KB of HTML in 2-5 seconds on a modern laptop. Hundred-page documents are still well under a second per page.

Why convert PDF to HTML at all?

HTML is the format the web speaks. Converting a PDF to HTML lets you index it for search, embed it in a web page, read it on any device with reflowable text, copy individual paragraphs cleanly, or further transform it programmatically. Does it preserve tables?

Tables in PDFs are typically just visually-positioned text — there is no underlying structure to recover. Preserved mode keeps the visual layout of the table cells (positioned spans). Reflowable mode breaks tables into a paragraph stream, which loses the cell structure but keeps the data readable. For structured table extraction, use a dedicated PDF-to-CSV or PDF-to-Excel converter (planned).

Will hyperlinks be preserved?

The current version focuses on the text layer. Embedded PDF link annotations are not yet exported into tags in the HTML — this is on our roadmap. URLs that appear as plain text in the PDF (e.g. https://example.com) will appear as plain text in the HTML and most browsers/clients will auto-linkify them on display.

Is the converter open source?

The conversion engine lives at v2/js/pdf/PdfToHtml.js in the PDF Edit codebase. It's the same module the editor uses for in-app PDF-to-HTML exports. Single source of truth across the editor and this landing page.
