Frequently Asked Questions — DD-214

What is a DD-214?

DD Form 214 (Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty) is the official DoD document issued to every service member who separates from active duty. It contains your dates of service, branch, rank, military occupational specialty (MOS/AFSC/Rating), character of discharge, decorations and awards, and other service information. It is the primary document veterans use to prove their service and access benefits.

What benefits require a DD-214?

The DD-214 is required to apply for: VA healthcare and disability compensation, GI Bill education benefits (Chapter 33, 30, etc.), VA home loan guarantees, state veterans benefits and veterans preference in state hiring, federal employment veterans preference, burial in a national cemetery, military funeral honors, and many state and local programs. Keep certified copies in multiple secure locations.

How do I get a copy of my DD-214?

Veterans separated within the last 62 years can request records through milConnect (milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil) — the fastest option for recent veterans. Older records are held by the National Archives (archives.gov/veterans) — request online, by mail using SF-180, or in person at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis, MO. Processing time varies from days (milConnect) to weeks or months (National Archives for older records).

What is the difference between Member 1 and Member 4 copies?

Member 4 is the long form — it includes the reason for separation, character of discharge, and all service details. This is the copy required for VA benefits, civil service employment preference, and most veterans programs. Member 1 is a short form that omits some sensitive information. Always use Member 4 for official purposes. If you're unsure which copy you have, check whether box 29 (Character of Discharge) is populated.

What if my DD-214 has errors?

To correct errors, file DD Form 149 (Application for Correction of Military Record) with the relevant service branch's Board for Correction of Military Records (BCMR or BCNR). Common corrections involve wrong character of discharge, missing awards, or errors in service dates. The process can take 12 months or longer. Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs) like the DAV, VFW, or American Legion can assist at no charge.

Can I give my DD-214 to an employer?

Yes, but be careful. Member 4 contains your full SSN and sensitive service details. Many employers only need the last 4 digits of the SSN and basic service verification. Consider using Member 1 or redacting the full SSN from a copy before sharing. Never leave original copies with anyone — provide certified photocopies only.

What should I do if my DD-214 was lost?

Request a replacement through milConnect or the National Archives (the process above). The replacement is a certified copy from official records — it carries the same legal weight as the original. Your original records are preserved by the government; your DD-214 can always be replaced, though older records (especially pre-1973) may be incomplete due to a 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center.

Is this an official DoD form?

PDF Edit provides a blank DD-214 template for reference and review purposes. The actual DD-214 issued to you at discharge is the official document — it is generated by DoD personnel systems and signed by military officials. Only the copy issued at your separation is legally valid for veterans benefits. Use PDF Edit to open and review your existing DD-214 PDF, not to create a new one.

About the DD-214

What It Contains

Service dates (entry and separation). Rank at discharge. Military occupational specialty. Character of discharge (Honorable, General, OTH, etc.). Decorations, medals, and campaign awards. Education and training. Foreign service. Combat operations. Reenlistment eligibility code. Separation authority and narrative reason.

Member 1 vs. Member 4

Member 4 is the complete long form — the copy you need for VA benefits. Member 1 omits certain sensitive fields including the reason for separation and character of discharge. When VA, state agencies, or employers request your DD-214, always provide Member 4 unless they specify otherwise.

The 1973 NPRC Fire

An estimated 16–18 million Army records and 100% of Army records from November 1912 through January 1960 were destroyed in a 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis. Veterans with service in this period may find their records reconstructed from alternate sources — medical records, morning reports, and pay records.

Storing Your DD-214

Veterans should keep the original in a fireproof safe, provide certified copies to family members, consider storing a digital copy on an encrypted drive, and register a copy with the county clerk's office (many counties offer this free service, providing an accessible certified copy on demand). Never give your original to anyone — always provide copies.

Upgrading a Discharge

Veterans with less-than-honorable discharges may petition for an upgrade through the Discharge Review Board (DD Form 293, available within 15 years of discharge) or the Board for Correction of Military Records (DD Form 149, no time limit). Upgraded discharges can unlock previously denied VA benefits. VSOs and veterans law attorneys assist with these petitions.

Official Records Source

Official DD-214 records are maintained by the DoD and National Archives. Requests for copies go through milConnect (milconnect.dmdc.osd.mil) or the National Archives (archives.gov/veterans). PDF Edit is not affiliated with the DoD or National Archives and cannot retrieve official records on your behalf.
