What is the difference between Member 1 and Member 4 copies?
Member 4 is the long form — it includes the reason for separation, character of discharge, and all service details. This is the copy required for VA benefits, civil service employment preference, and most veterans programs. Member 1 is a short form that omits some sensitive information. Always use Member 4 for official purposes. If you're unsure which copy you have, check whether box 29 (Character of Discharge) is populated.
What if my DD-214 has errors?
To correct errors, file DD Form 149 (Application for Correction of Military Record) with the relevant service branch's Board for Correction of Military Records (BCMR or BCNR). The 1973 NPRC Fire
An estimated 16–18 million Army records and 100% of Army records from November 1912 through January 1960 were destroyed in a 1973 fire at the National Personnel Records Center in St. Louis.
